The idea of constructing a castle is connected to the defense. The Castles and Forts were the governors and Feudal lords’ houses.

In ancient Egypt, Royal palaces fortified with towers and Barricades. The same for the forts. In the ancient Greek, the Leaders were fortifying their palaces as well. As we know, the castles appeared for the first time in Western Europe from the Middle-Ages. From thousand years BC to the year 1500.

The feudalism was the reason of the appearance of this kind of constructions, because each Noble possessed a section of land and everything on it. Occasionally, those feudal lords attacked the land around and use them to empower their positions. Of course, from time to time, they were attacked too. They had to make strong and well-built houses. So they built what we call, nowadays, castles.

Who built the first castle in the world?

Since the circumstances were similar in Europe, the castles that were constructed were alike, either in Germany, France, Spain or Britain.

One of the first castles that were built in England was the ‘Tower of London’. It was founded by William the Opener in 1078. The tower was constituted of many floors. Double walls tower, with small windows, spiral staircases situated in the corners of the tower. The feudal lord and his army were living inside it.

Another first castle was the Headengham, founded in 1130. With also double walls, built with six meters thicken rocks, thicker by the corners. There was a hall inside in the middle, two floors high. It existed for the same reason which is defense. The lack and smallness of windows was good.

Later, castles were founded around indoor arenas, to give more space for the ones who live inside and to have more comfortable facilities.
