The animals’ names come from different
reasons. Some named due to their form. The others take the names of their
characteristics. The hippopotamus for example. Known as Buffalo Sea and lacquer. Hippo means the horse and
potamos means the river according to the ancient Greek language. The Rhinoceros
name was taken from the ancient Greek language too, a rhino means the nose and
eros means the pairing. Because it has a pairing on its face it’s called
rhinoceros.
The leopard’s name comes from the Latin word leopardos which means spotted lion. Some animals
have English names with significances other languages. For example, camel comes
from Jamal in Arabic, Jamal means camel. Giraffe is Zarafa in Arabic, Zarafa is
giraffe. The meaning of this word is long neck.
Bull, Oakes, Paul and deer are Anglo-Saxon words.
Kit in Arabic or cat in English. This
animal name comes from the Latin word Jatta. The duck comes
from an old English language to design a diver. They have common place water. A
wolf in old times meant a sort of wolves, it’s an Anglo-Saxon word. In modern
English it becomes the name of a fox. And because the fox looks like a fox it takes
its name.
Any way, it
is not possible to give explanation to all animals’ names because there are too
many animals.
