In the old times people live in the country
sides, without commercial shops because the little farmers’ assemblies were far
from each other. Because the goods themselves were not enough for either
selling or buying and the people were not daily available.
However, the people were assembling for
religious celebrations. Traders use this occasion to sell their goods. This is
the how markets started in old times. Actually, the English word ‘Fair’ means
exhibition, it comes from the Latin word ‘Feria’, which gives the sense of
‘holiday’ or vacation.
In old days, Egyptians organized markets
around the tombs of their dead people, to buy, to sell and at the same time to
perform religious rituals. Greek people also used to trade and glorify their
divinity Delphic.
Before the showing of Islam thousands of
Arabs used to travel to Mecca, which was a commercial and religious centre.
They spent weeks in worshipping their deities. They stay in the Medina for
trading then. Oils, jewelries and spices were some of the goods they sell and
buy.
Such commercial centers were important in
China, India, Persia and in Aztec (Mexico). The commercial markets in the
Romaine Empire were linked to the religious harvest ceremonies. Farmers used to
take their products to those celebrations and exchange them with the cloths or
other professional products.
In old ages, organizing the commercial
markets was only in favor of big cities, the feudal or the king gives this
right to the responsible of the city. The traders had to pay money to the
responsible who had the authorization. There were rules and laws of the
markets’ activities.
In other ancient civilizations, people stop
fighting each other, when they met in the markets; they considered it a sacred
place. These markets played an important role in developing the commerce
business. They made the commercial business between East and Europe north and
East became possible.
